Help save the turtles!
We support the World Sustainability Foundation (WSF) which in collaboration with the Diani Turtle Watch, aims to protect the green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and the hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) in Kenya.
World Sustainability Foundation is a nonprofit organization started to protect and improve global biodiversity. In collaboration with countless organizations across the world, WSF commits to develop campaigns to protect endangered species, enhance land and protect marine and terrestrial habitats.
Started in 2012, the Diani Turtle Watch works with turtle conservationists in the country. They cover an area of more than 50km, relocating the nests once they are laid to protect them from natural predators. They endeavor to educate and involve the local communities as well as children in schools, engaging them in regular beach cleanups.
They are also involved in restoring mangrove forests, something which they will involve you in!
Thanks to your contribution we will be able to support these passionate individuals in protecting the animals of this planet.
Your tour leader will be Mario Passoni
Mario is a naturalist, he has worked for many years as a nature guide around the world, such as in the Maldives, Madagascar, Mozambique, Seychelles, and also in Chale Island!
In the past, he has conducted coral restoration projects and photo identification of manta rays, whale sharks, and sea turtles.
He is now the conservation and awareness project manager of the World Sustainability Foundation (WSF).
During this trip, Mario will take you to discover nature and local biodiversity, both outside and inside the water.
Insights into biology
During your stay, our naturalist will guide you through these fascinating topics:
- The wonders of the underwater world of Kenya
- The importance of mangrove forests
- The beauty of Tsavo East
But don't worry, they are not real lessons, but just nice and interactive insights to show you what you will see during both sea and land excursions.
We will also talk about conservation projects and how you can help protect biodiversity. Get ready for a journey that's as educational as it is unforgettable!
Mangrove planting
During this trip, the kind people at Diani Turtle Watch will take us on a mangrove walk. The most unique part of this trip is that you will get to plant a mangrove!
This way, you will be contributing directly to the growth of the forest, creating an experience like no other!
Sighting of wild animals
During this holiday there will be the concrete possibility of spotting and interacting with numerous animals like sea turtles, dolphins, lions, leopards, and elephants amongst others. We may even be able to see sea turtles nesting on the beach.
Although it is the best period for these sightings, it is very important to keep in mind that they must choose to interact with us and that we cannot guarantee 100% that we will be able to see them, as they are wild animals, free as they should be in their natural environment.
Scuba Diving in Kenya
As an optional activity, it could be possible to go scuba diving.
The Southern Coast of Kenya offers some world-class diving where there are chances to spot turtles and dolphins. Hawksbill and green sea turtles are seen regularly, and they use the Diani Beach as a nesting ground. There is also a wide variety of macro animals and critters like frogfish and nudibranchs.
There will also be a chance to dive into the beautiful Funguo shipwreck, a purpose-sunk ship. It has become an artificial reef, home to a plethora of fish. If you have a love for raw underwater life, diving in Kenya is perfect for you!
Note: scuba diving depends on sea weather conditions and availability in the local diving center.
Explore Tsavo East (Optional)
Kenya is a land with a wide variety of landscapes, from vast plains to soaring mountains and tropical beaches. The country is a perfect place for wildlife enthusiasts because of the multitude of wildlife sanctuaries.
As an optional activity, we can go on Safari to the breathtaking Tsavo East Park for a day and a half, where we get the chance to catch sight of wild animals like elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras amongst others. Birds and animals alike come to a water hole near the lodge we are staying at, so photographers, get your cameras out!
Wasini Marine Park (Optional)
Nestled off the coast of Kenya, Wasini Marine Park is a haven for marine enthusiasts. Here, visitors can marvel at vibrant coral reefs, encounter playful dolphins, and explore mangrove forests teeming with life. Whether snorkeling, diving, or simply enjoying the beauty of the ocean, this park offers unforgettable experiences for all who venture here.
