Diving Safari Komodo

with Moana Cruising

Komodo is part of the Sunda Islands and the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara. Approximately 2,000 inhabitants reside on the 390 km² island. The Komodo National Park, covering a total area of 1817 km², includes three main islands: Komodo, Rinca, and Padar, as well as several smaller volcanic islands. In 1991, the Komodo National Park was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Initially established in 1980 to protect Komodo dragons, the focus later expanded to safeguard the entire flora and fauna.

Komodo offers not only on land but also underwater treasures. The waters surrounding the island are home to 260 coral species, 70 different sponges, 17 species of dolphins and whales, 1000 various fish species, and two types of sea turtles.

With the initiation of conservation efforts, dynamite fishing was halted, leading to an increase in coral-covered areas to 60 percent.

The journey begins with a flight to Labuan Bajo from Bali, with daily flights available. The flight duration is approximately one hour. Upon arrival in Labuan Bajo, you will be greeted by a Moana Cruising staff member and transferred to the ship.

The Moana is a classic 30-meter-long Phinisi schooner, an Indonesian boat type, accommodating up to 10 guests. It was built in 2003 and 2004 in a traditional style, entirely crafted from teak and ironwood.

There are a total of five comfortable cabins, three with double beds and two with single beds. All cabins feature private bathrooms and air conditioning.

The upper deck is perfect for sunbathing, and the air-conditioned salon invites relaxation. Additionally, guests can enjoy cozy gatherings at the large corner table.

For those seeking a unique experience, there's an option to sleep on deck and marvel at the starry sky. The crew of Moana Cruising provides blankets for this purpose.

Meals & Drinks

On the Moana, you will be pampered throughout your journey! During the diving safari, you can enjoy five meals a day along with fresh juices and snacks.

The onboard bar is stocked with local beer, international wines, and a selection of spirits. Freshly brewed Indonesian tea and coffee are also readily available. In addition to the usual soft drinks, there's homemade iced tea for your refreshment.

Diving Safari in Komodo - Best Travel Time:

Komodo is situated approximately 8° south of the equator, leading to two distinct seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.

Dry Season (April to October):

  • Air temperature averages around 30°C.
  • Generally, a light breeze complements the temperature.
  • Nights can be cooler, around 25°C, so wearing thin, long clothing is recommended.

Rainy Season (November to March):

  • Similar air temperatures around 30°C, but with less wind.
  • Nights are not as cool, and occasional rain showers occur, as the name suggests.
  • Rain showers are usually intense but short, although prolonged rain can occur, especially in January and February.
  • An advantage of the rainy season is fewer diving safari boats in the Komodo National Park.

Water Temperature:

  • Water temperatures range from 25°C to 29°C.
  • Occasionally, thermoclines may cause cooler temperatures.

Additional Notes:

  • Magical, starry nights are a highlight during a diving safari in Komodo.
  • January and February are the most rain-intensive months.

Choosing the best time for a Komodo diving safari depends on personal preferences. The dry season offers more predictable weather and comfortable temperatures, while the rainy season provides a unique experience with fewer crowds and lush landscapes. Divers should consider their comfort with potentially brief but heavy rain showers during the rainy season.
