Liveaboard diving trip Maldives

The Maldives, located in the Indian Ocean southwest of India and Sri Lanka, consist of 19 island groups. The island groups stretch over 871 kilometers in a north-south direction. The Maldives comprise 26 atolls and a total of 1,196 islands, of which 144 are used for tourism purposes and 220 by locals. Not all islands, primarily only hotel islands or those accessible by safari boats, can be visited by tourists. Islands that must be visited during the day usually need to be vacated before sunset.

The Maldives...

a dream destination for diving safaris

Maldives

The Maldives have a tropical climate with high humidity, and temperatures rarely drop below 25 degrees Celsius. From May to October, the climate is influenced by the southwest monsoon, and from November to April, the northeast monsoon prevails. The southwest monsoon brings wind and more intense precipitation.

The months of January to April are considered the best travel times.

The partially untouched coral reefs protect the 26 atolls and were formed by the subsidence of huge volcanoes. Over time, coral and the stunning fringing reefs, visible from the plane, developed. The existing currents within the Maldives led to the formation of elongated channels, which are now explored by divers from around the world. The flora and fauna are spectacular, with diverse corals and schools of fish (both large and small) characterizing the Maldives.

The Maldives offer excellent visibility and varying current conditions (from gentle to very strong). A diving vacation between December and April should be in the eastern atolls, and between May and November, in the western atolls.

The Atolls

North Male Atoll

The capital Malé and an international airport on Hulhulé Island are located in the North Male Atoll. This atoll is the most developed for tourism, with numerous renowned resorts and good infrastructure. North Male has a large number of well-known dive sites in the Maldives and is well protected against monsoons due to its channel.

South Male Atoll

The Cadu Canal separates the South Male Atoll from the North Male Atoll. The main island of the South Male Atoll is Maafushi, where locals live, and tradition and culture are largely preserved. Another local island in this atoll is Ost Guraidu. There, you can buy souvenirs and take a stroll through the streets. Then there is Gulhi, the third and last island of the locals in this atoll. In the South Male Atoll, there are also numerous holiday and uninhabited islands. This atoll is suitable for both novice and experienced divers. Snorkelers can enjoy the good visibility on the east side.

Some of the popular diving areas in South Male include Coral Gardens, The Canyon, and Cocoa Thila.

Ari Atoll

In the largest atoll, Ari Atoll, there are more than 100 islands and over 10,000 inhabitants. The dive spots in the north of the atoll attract countless tourists annually. Locals mainly live in the south of Ari. Tourists can stay in one of the many resorts or in vacation homes at different price levels. Locals in this atoll live off tourism, but fishing is the most important economic sector.

Ari Atoll is suitable for both beginners and experienced divers. With luck, mantas and whale sharks can be observed on the west side, and the north side is characterized by beautiful coral growth. Popular dive sites in Ari Atoll include Kudarah Thila, Broken Rock Thila, and Tinfushi Thila.

Gaafaru Atoll

Gaafaru Atoll consists of Gaafaru and Velifaru islands and is located 3 kilometers north of the North Male Atoll. The Gaafaru Channel separates the North Male Atoll from the Gaafaru Atoll. Here, fishing is the main source of income for about 1000 locals who live on the east side of Gaafaru. Velifaru Island has few locals but has a reef with a fascinating wreck that is worth seeing.

Felidhu Atoll

Unlike the North Male Atoll, there is little tourism in Felidhu Atoll. Tuna fishing is the main source of income for the hospitable locals
