Sudan Dive Safari

Experience Extraordinary Diving

A diving safari in Sudan offers a glimpse into the spectacular and impressive underwater world of the southern Red Sea. The diversity of coral and marine life is sure to delight every diver's heart. Sudanese dive safaris provide the opportunity to explore famous wrecks such as the "Umbria" and the "Blue Belt." Jacques Cousteau's underwater station, "Precontinent II," is another top-notch dive site.

The Qita'al Banna dive spot boasts a steep wall that plunges to 600 meters, while the Sha´ab Rumi dive site offers a great chance to encounter numerous sharks. Dive safaris typically start either from Port Ghalib (Marsa Alam, Egypt) or Port Sudan.

Diving in Sudan is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience and should be on every diver's bucket list.Sudan shares its northern border with Egypt and the northeastern border with the Red Sea. The vegetation in Sudan, much like in Egypt, is sparse, with a few oases near the Nile. A vast, flat basin lies south of the dry savannah, traversed by the White Nile and its tributaries. Sudan is an Islamic republic, and Sharia, Islamic law, is in effect.

Sudan

The best diving areas of the Red Sea are found in Sudan. Due to government regulations and a lack of infrastructure, traveling in Sudan is very challenging, making the dive spots still largely untouched.

Beste Reisezeit

The thermocline is at different depths depending on the season. Hammerhead sharks, for example, are almost always found in cooler water, so they are more commonly found at shallower depths from February to June. From September to November, there is usually less wind, and the thermocline is at shallower depths. In Northern Sudan, there is also a manta season in October and November because during this time, there is a lot of plankton in the warm surface water. Smooth seas are less frequent in December and January, with cooler air and water temperatures leading to larger waves.

Water Temperatures

January and February - 24-26°C

March to June - 27-29°C (under the thermocline 25-26°C)

From late June - 30-32°C

From September - Water temperatures begin to decrease

Waves, Wind & Temperatures

Unlike Egypt, Sudan is generally less wavy and windy, with temperatures several degrees higher. In December and January, the wind often increases, resulting in higher waves. From February, the weather calms down, and the waves decrease.

Diving Areas

There are four diving regions in Sudan. In the North, you find well-known dive sites like Shaab Rumi, Angarosh, and the Abington Reef. Port Sudan has its own dive sites, and south of it, there are the dive sites of the Suakin Group (Sha´ab Jumna and Sha´ab Anbar). In recent years, some ships have also been exploring the deep southern regions bordering Eritrea.

Northern Sudan

Larger reefs and atolls than in the South.

Jaques Cousteau set up an underwater station at Sha´ab Rumi, where people lived for seven days at a depth of 27m.

Large fish are common, and from August to November, there may be encounters with mantas in the Masharifa Lagoon.

January to April is the most likely time to spot large fish.

Port Sudan

The 150m-long transport ship "Umbria" was built in Germany and sailed under the Italian flag at the end.The Umbria sank during World War II to prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemy. The wreck is in a maximum depth of 35m and features accessible areas like the engine room, cargo holds, and the restaurant.

  • Another highlight is the Sanganeb Reef, which includes two dive spots.

Suakin Archipelago

Located 30 nautical miles from Port Sudan, it consists of various islands with steep walls, variable visibility (depending on the current), large schools of fish, and a chance of encountering large fish.

The reefs have excellent coral coverage of hard and soft corals.

Deep South

In the deep South, there are nine small islands and a few Habilis (translated from Arabic to German as "unborn reef," which are reefs that do not reach the surface entirely).

Dives at these reefs can only take place in calm seas, typically from late March to mid-June.

The deep South is particularly relevant for shark sightings, with more of these elegant creatures seen than in the rest of Sudan.

Due to fewer protected anchorages in the deep South, this region can be visited only rarely.

Diving Safaris

The best way to dive the beautiful reefs in Sudan is to go on a diving safari. There are no onshore dive bases with a functioning diving operation. With our excellent partner, Aggressor, we can provide you with an offer for an outstanding diving safari in Sudan.

Vaccinations

Before your trip, familiarize yourself with the medical advice and travel regulations of the country. Currently, a yellow fever vaccination is required when entering Egypt from Sudan. This is relevant for tours that start and end in Egypt.
